How Much Do you know the Chinese Spring Festival?
Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival and has a history of more than 5,000 years.
For our Chinese, this is the grandest and most important annual event. The festival is not only held in China mainland, but also held in HK, Macau, Taiwan, Asian countries (like Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam), and Chinatowns in the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia.
These traditions have also evolved into their unique way of celebrating. As one of the traditional festivals, it’s time for the whole family to reunite, which is similar to Christmas in other west countries.
There’s no set date for Chinese New Year
According to the Lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is on January 1st and lasts until the 15th. Unlike western holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when you try to calculate it with the solar calendar, the date is all over the place.
What would we do at the Spring Festival?
since in modern China, most elderly parents live in rural villages while their children work in the cities. The migration back home and to go on vacation is called chunyun (春运), or Spring Migration.
Children receive lucky money in red envelopes
In other cultures, children receive gifts for holidays. Gifts are also exchanged during the Spring Festival. But Chinese children receive something else too—red envelopes. This is a Spring Festival gift Put money into the red paper for the children. During the Spring Festival, parents and grandparents usually send red envelopes to their children, which may be one of the most recognized traditions during the festival.
You eat dumplings for every meal, every day.
Well, technically you’re supposed to. But not many people do that anymore because you can have too much of even the most delicious foods. So most people will eat dumplings during the New Year’s Eve dinner. Others will eat them for the first breakfast.
If you check out other greetings or blessings, you’ll see that most are about:
-
Plentiful harvests
-
Wealth and fortune
-
Health and longevity
-
Having children and large families
