Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional festival of China, normally, we will celebrate this traditional festival with making & eating “zongzi”, a traditional Chinese rice dumpling & racing the dragon boat.
Origin: The First Patriotic Poet in Chinese Literature & History—Qu Yuan
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the date of the festival varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2017, it occurred on 30th May; in 2018, on 18th June; in 2019, on 7th June; and in 2020, on 25th June, in 2021, on 14th June.
It is the day we mark to memorize a best-known ancient patriotic politician & poet, Qu Yuan, who had dedicated his whole life to the country. He drowned in massive reading & show his compassion for the people at his very young.
Qu Yuan talent & education background gave him the aspiration to contribute to his own country through his prominent capability.
However, his talent & enlightened strategy were being excluded & framed by the aristocratic power, finally exiled to the regions south of the Yangtze River, it was those days, he write down his imperishable poems “Lisao”, “Inquiries of Heaven” & “Nine Odes”.
Qu Yuan served in high offices. But, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu Yuan was banished for opposing the alliance & even accused of treason. During his exile, Qu wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty Eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In that despair, Qu Yuan died by suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River at the end.
It is said that the local people, who admired him (Qu Yuan), raced out in their boats to save him, or at least retrieve his body. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river, so the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan’s body. This is said to be the origin of~zongzi (Chinese call 粽子).
During World War 2, Qu Yuan began to be treated in a nationalist way, as “China’s first patriotic poet”. The view of Qu’s social idealism & unbending patriotism became canonical under China after 1949 year Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War.
Actually，you should know, the dragon boat race already existed as early as the Warring States Period.
